free domains?

Is there a way where I can sign up for a free domain? For the past few months I've been looking for a domain for my website. And when I did some if not all had price tags on them where I couldn't afford it. Or price tags with discounts with hidden fees or hidden things you had to buy. This was the same deal with finding a ventrilo server. And when I gave up on that, I also gave up looking for a domain for my site as neither were working. Any ideas where I can find a domain name for my site?

I think all domains, that is www.sitename.com, org, net, gov, and whatever else there is cost money, not sure though. Caitlin

Oh yes, TK! I didn't know that was free. What's the site you go to to get a TK?

dot com, net, org domains are about $10/year. Plus any webhosting if you want that.

Yeah i paid ten bucks for my domain. Or rather my friend and I did. Ten bucks per year. Caitlin

Can cost up to $17 if you have privacy added. Privacy is where if anyone does a trace on your Web address they get back your information typically, but with privacy they would get back the information of the privacy provider. Also, I know of one Web host that doesn't have hidden costs.

Ultra Host

They do Web hosting and domains. I'm going through there myself. I've heard of .tk, but don't know where to get it. I know someone who has it though, and if you want I can ask them about it.

Oh crap! I was just on the .tk site a hour ago. LOL. I might settle with that as whois can't trace .tk domains but you gotta have 90 some hits a month. Not to mention you don't hold the domain rights or license to that domain so for example we say www.witchcraft.tk that's not yours completely even though it's registered. If anyone knows where I can get more traffic to my site for that ammount then I'm all ears and will go with the .tk domain extension. But as of now still looking.

Yup I found the url. And if you want to see automatically if that domain is taken in your address bar (I just did this lol.) type in http://www.yourname.tk yourname is the name you want. And hit enter! It'll go straight to the Dot TK website and tell you if it's available or not!

Well since we're talking about webhosts with no hidden costs, I am kinda obligated to say that my company, Stream Madness, does web hosting as well. PM me if you have any questions. Not sure about paying for that privacy thing as you could just put in different information for the administrative and other contacts when registering.

mmm I notice that the free ones have heaps of annoying adds and popup windows. like I always avoid CJB.net addresses now. It is practically impossible to get to the actual proper site. .. I've got a "webhop.net" address which I get for free that came with my ftp server at DNS2go. actually you get five of them per account I think.

There is also no-ip which does free forwarding, and doesn't give adds. Really, I should say it's for d y n s. I've got it directing to my Web site here... Works pretty good.

Not too keen on DNS2go. And NO-IP is strictly there to freeze your IP address with a name. Thats where I got my server name for my ventrilo account. I'll give no ip another try and see if it's any good. But what exactly is web forwarding? Curious.

If I don't have my termonology totally messed up; (which with the way I'm feeling it's quite possible), Web forwarding is where you have a long Web address and you choose a place that will give you a shorter Web address to link to the same site. CJB.net does this, but from what I hear they're majorly doing ads now. Hmm, there is also, Zu6. Least I believe that's the name now. They use to be Zu5, but I believe they've changed they're name lately, so, God only knows what else they've changed.

Yeah, the free ones either have hidden costs, popup ads or other limits, like holding rights and stuff. I'm using ultrahost with my friend for our web site now, an it works pretty well for a decent price, and they offer streaming at a good price, too, though we haven't tried this yet. Caitlin

Yup, I went with no-ip to redirect my website so that all pages on my site show http://blindvi.no-ip.com. And I only get one banner ad at the top of my pages.

I've heard www.webhop.org is good, though I think you get an address there from getting some sort of FTP doohickey. I know you've already got it worked out BLindVI, but I thought I'd post this.

Ok, here're some other ones. You can get a url forwarding from net.tc I believe it is, though they're page is annoying to use.. I personally go with no-ip for free (n-republic.bounceme.net) and I've heard for good prices godaddy.com is good. Haven't tried them myself, but that's what I've heard. Hope that can help. If anyone has any further questions on these, drop me a line, and I'll try to help. :) BTW, as a side note, .tk is a pain: they have one of those stupid image fields where you have to read the letters out of the picture, or they did when I checked them out. Furthermore, they were unhelpful when I sent them an email regarding the problem.

Yeah so far No-IP rocks. I hadn't had any problems yet. And .tk is a ok site but here's the catch: the domain isn't legally yours unless you purchase it. And they have way too many rules and regulations to follow like if you don't attract a certin ammount of people to your site per month they take your domain down.
